Important foods you should be eating during pregnancy to stimulate brain development in your infant in Richmond, Texas

Posted on 08-25-2014

There are a number of foods which have been scientifically proven to improve your newborn baby’s ability to learn as well as to build his or her capacity for memory. Below are some of the foods you should be eating during pregnancy to aid your child’s brain development.

Fruits and vegetables

Most fruits and vegetables contain a number of antioxidants, which help to protect your infant’s brain from irreversible tissue damage. Cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes and papaya contain the most antioxidants.

You need to ensure that your iron intake almost doubles during your pregnancy. Visit your doctor to get tested for iron deficiency when you become pregnant. A lack of iron during pregnancy can lead to serious developmental problems in your child such as a lower IQ and poor growth. Some sources of iron are chicken, beef and iron-rich breakfast cereals.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid

Omega-3 fatty acid is found in a number of different fish. Studies have shown that women who eat fish rich in omega-3 are likely to have babies with higher IQ’s. While eating fish is a good way to aid your baby’s brain development, be careful to avoid fish rich in mercury. These include swordfish, shark, tilefish and king mackerel. If you do not eat fish, consult with your doctor to find a suitable fish oil supplement.

Folic Acid

You need to ensure you have enough folic acid during pregnancy. You can take a prenatal vitamin with the recommended 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid to help prevent birth defects in your baby's brain and spinal cord. Folic acid is a B vitamin and the best food sources are fortified cereals.
